A Year Ago, That Was Me

Hi everyone, Scout here! I asked Samson if I could take over the blog this month because September is a pretty big month for me. It has officially been ONE YEAR since my humans rescued me from the auction! Can you believe it? And I have to say… have you SEEN how good I look for my age?! Scroll to see me now!

A year ago, my future was completely unknown. I didn't know where I was going, who was going to care for me, or what was going to happen next. What I didn't know was that I was about to land in a place filled with some of the most patient and devoted humans I have ever met. You see, I'm not exactly the easiest guy to feed. I'm missing all but 4 of my molars, which means my humans can't just toss me some hay and call it dinner. I need special meals and a little extra work every single day. But nobody here has ever made me feel like I'm too much work. For the last year, they have just kept showing up, and when I look at myself now, I think you can see exactly what a year of good food, veterinary care, patience, and love can do.

And Now There Are Three More…

Apparently my humans didn't learn their lesson after bringing ME home from the auction because this month they went back and rescued THREE senior mares! Everyone, meet Marilyn, Polly, and Pocket. ❤️ Looking at these three girls reminds me an awful lot of where my own story started.

Marilyn has a body condition score of around 1 and has an incredibly long road ahead of her. My humans estimate she needs to gain around 1,000 pounds. Yes, you read that correctly—1,000 pounds. Polly has some dental issues that need to be addressed, and it appears she recently had a baby taken away from her because she is still producing milk. She needs to gain approximately 250 pounds. And then there is Pocket, who earned her name pretty quickly because all she wants is to be everyone's little pocket pony. ❤️ She is incredibly sweet, but underneath that personality is another senior girl who needs some serious TLC. Pocket needs to gain approximately 500 pounds.

Thankfully, our amazing veterinarian has already been out to examine all three girls. My humans now have feeding plans in place to help them gain weight slowly and safely, and their dental care is planned for October. This is the part of rescue I know all too well—you can't undo everything overnight. You can't safely put hundreds of pounds on a horse in a few weeks. You feed them, care for them, address their medical needs as they come, and most importantly, you give them time. Trust me when I tell you, a year can change everything.

These Girls Need Sponsors!

Marilyn, Polly, and Pocket are going to be with us for a while as they recover, and all three girls are looking for sponsors to help with their care. Feed, veterinary care, dental work, farrier visits, medications and bedding all add up, and unfortunately everything costs more than it used to.

My humans see the rising costs from both sides. It costs more to care for all of us, but they also know those same rising prices are affecting the wonderful people who donate to the rescue. We understand that funds are tight for many families right now, so we aren't asking one person to do something huge. We're asking a lot of people to do something small. If you can spare just $10, would you donate it to help us continue caring for animals like Marilyn, Polly, Pocket…and me? Ten dollars may not sound like it can make a huge difference, but when our village comes together, those $10 donations add up quickly. I'm living proof of what your support can do.

A Little Mayfly Update ❤️

I also need to give you an update on our little friend Mayfly. Just LOOK at her now! If you compare her before picture to her picture today, you can see how far this little girl has already come.

We had originally hoped to have Mayfly's procedure done in October, but unfortunately we haven't raised enough yet to safely move forward. Only four people sponsored her procedure, so her appointment has now been moved to December. We still need to raise $2,725 for her care.

My humans really hoped they wouldn't have to postpone it, but they need to make sure the funds are available before she goes. Once Purdue performs the CT of her face and sees exactly what is happening with those tooth roots and her sinus cavity, we want to be able to move forward with whatever treatment they recommend while she is there instead of bringing her home and making her go through another trip later. While she waits, we'll keep caring for her, loving her, and getting her ready.

One Year Later

A year ago, I was the horse coming home from the auction. This year, it's Marilyn, Polly, and Pocket. Mayfly is still waiting for the next part of her story, and somewhere out there is another animal we haven't even met yet who is going to need these humans too.

That's something I've learned during my year here: rescue isn't just the moment someone saves you. It's everything that happens afterward. It's making another bucket of mash, scheduling another vet appointment, holding a horse for the farrier, paying another feed bill, celebrating another pound gained, and then waking up the next morning and doing it all over again. Those ordinary days are what eventually create transformations like mine.

I know times are tough, and my humans know it too. But if you can give $10 this month, sponsor one of our new girls, help Mayfly reach her goal, or even just share our story, you become part of those days too.

Take another look at my picture and remember where I was one year ago. That's what one year can do. I can't wait to show you what Marilyn, Polly, Pocket, and Mayfly look like a year from now.

Thank you for giving horses like us the time and care we need to become who we were always supposed to be.

Until next month,

Scout ❤️🐴

One year rescued… and looking pretty darn good, if I do say so myself.
