I hope this message reaches you in excellent health and with a buoyant spirit. I am Black Beauty, an elder mare who sought refuge at the Illinois Horse Rescue of Will County in March. Unfortunately, my previous owner showed no concern for my well-being. Growing older comes with its share of aches, but one pain you don't anticipate is the gnawing hunger in your stomach. I had become terribly weak from severe malnourishment. Additionally, a neglected cut on my inside pastern had developed into proud flesh the size of a baseball. However, without hesitation, IHRWC welcomed me into their rescue. Though my recovery will be lengthy, I'm steadily regaining strength.
Have you ever felt as though misfortune continually follows you? That sentiment resonates deeply with all of us at IHRWC. Having barely survived the past few years, we are now struggle with a drought! As if sky-high prices weren't enough, the cost of hay is expected to rise due to a poor yield caused by the scarcity of rain. For instance, in June 2022, IHRWC's hay field produced 40 round bales, whereas this year, it yielded only 18. That's less than half of what we rely on to nourish ourselves. Consequently, we have incurred a loss of approximately $1,500. To sustain all of us, IHRWC needs around 4,000 small square bales annually, amounting to a staggering $20,000 required for hay alone!
